The Greasy Creek Legend

Greasy Creek (a wild trout stream) flows through upland pastures in Floyd, Va. Legend has it that hunters once skinned so many bear along its banks that the creek filled with grease. Our Home Water–The Upper New River

The New River’s ancient riverbed, pristine water, and diverse habitat provides a home to many species of trophy fish. Floating down this phenomenal fishery and getting lost in its natural beauty, you might even forget your original objective here- to catch fish! The abundant supply of forage available on the Upper New makes for a healthy population of smallmouth bass, walleye, and muskie. Throw in a seasonal running striped or hybrid bass along with the spotted bass that call the river home, and you may find it difficult to choose your target species.. . . And then there are those magical days that we catch the Upper New “slam.”

GCO Press

Over the years, Greasy Creek Outfitters has appeared in many prominent magazines, including In-Fisherman, Bassmaster, Fly-Fish America, Eastern Fly-Fishing, NC Game and Fish, NC Sportsman, VA Game and Fish, Virginia Wildlife, Chesapeake Angler and more.

Greasy Creek Outfitters was started in 1997 by Mike Smith, who at first fished the New River for his own enjoyment, later bringing friends along who spread the word to their friends and lead to the birth of Greasy Creek Outfitters, the first fishing guide service on the Upper New River. In 2006, Gil joined Mike in the GCO venture as a guide with a lifetime of fishing and outdoor experience. When Mike started New River Fly Fishing in 2009, it created the opportunity for Gil to own and operate the company he loved while still keeping a professional relationship with Mike while cross-promoting both ventures. Today, Greasy Creek Outfitters is owned by Gil and continues to operate just as it did under Mike Smith.
